Question: How do I get health insurance today?
Answer: If you need to buy health insurance right now, you are going to find it difficult. ObamaCare has changed the whole landscape of health insurance so that there are open enrollment periods when anyone can sign up but when those are over, you can only buy short term insurance. And not every health insurer sells that.
Right now we are in the period where open enrollment has ended. That means if you are in the unfortunate position of needing health care insurance today, you can’t just go out and buy it like you could in the past. Right now, the only thing insurance companies will sell you is a temporary policy that will bridge the gap until the next enrollment period starts. That should be in October 2014 through March 2015.
If you do buy short terms health coverage, you will then need to start all over in October and get ObamaCare. For that you will need to go to the healthcare.gov website and hope that it works better than it did the first time around. If you want to avoid ObamaCare and buy a policy on your own in October, you can do that too as the health insurers should all be selling policies both through ObamaCare and to individuals who want to sign up on their own.
