The just announced new deadline for signing up for ObamaCare insurance and avoiding any tax penalties is March 31st, 2014. This is a six week extension which was necessitated by the many problems with the healthcare.gov website.
The March 31 deadline applies to all people in America (unless you have an exemption). Failure to have health coverage by that date will mean having to pay a tax fine levied by the IRS. It doesn’t matter whether you have trouble signing up or even whether you can afford it: if you don’t have insurance in an ObamaCare approved health plan you will be in violation of the law and have to pay a fine.
Americans are getting health insurance cancellation letters from their insurance companies by the tens of thousands. Every day now people are realizing that their health insurance is either going up or being cancelled and they are going to healthcare.gov to get help. Unfortunately, the website is still not working properly and will not be until the end of November per President Obama’s remarks about the matter last week.
It is still possible (although unlikely) that the ObamaCare signup deadline will be further postponed after March 31 or even delayed a year if the website cannot be fixed in time.
12/14/2013 Update: If you want to have health insurance starting January 1, 2014, the signup deadline was 12/23/2013 but that has now been EXTENDED to 12/31/2013. Obama made the extension himself because so many people are still having problems signing up. The problem is that insurance companies are being told now that they have to issue a person insurance policies that are active with possibly less than a 24 hour turn around which is almost impossible. President Obama is changing laws by himself and just shooting from the hip now that he is in so much trouble with the poor roll out of the Affordable Care Act.
